Service Learning
“To stretch [the children’s] intellects, to make them classicists,
to form budding scientists and mathematicians,
to give them academic excellence
will have no worth unless
they are also integrated, committed, respecting, loving, and caring individuals.”
Margaret Stephenso (Montessori teacher trainer), Cosmic Education
“I would like to thank you for organizing the community service projects for Queen of Angels. Having your students volunteer at our organization has been a blessing.
I have heard over and over again from staff and volunteers
that the students who have come have been very polite, courteous, and helpful.
Again, thank you.”
Jessica A. Wabler
Executive Director
Madisonville Education and Assistance Center
Gospel values are put into action through service, in a wide variety of venues. At Queen of Angels, our students participate in a variety of age-appropriate service-learning activities.
Some activities have become annual traditions:
- Christmas caroling: Each year, 50-60 students of all ages, along with parents, spread the Joy of Christ’s coming by caroling in our Madison Place neighborhood.
- Easter flowers: Each year, all of our classes, from preschool through eighth grade, deliver potted flowers to residents of our neighborhood as an Easter greeting.
- Supporting Third World Children: For the past eight years, our entire school has supported two children through the Christian Foundation for Children and the Aging: Mario (from Mexico) and Preeti (from India). In addition to annual Penny War collections that provide funds for school supplies and other necessities for these children, we have periodic written correspondence between our students and our sponsored children.
Age-appropriateness is key to service learning. Clearly, a 5-year old will experience service in a totally different way than a 14-year old. For this reason, the core of our service learning is activities that grow out of each classroom and age level.
